23rd December 2005 Evergreen Plants

There are not many evergreen trees and shrubs in the British native flora so
in the past it is not surprising that these beacons of green in the bare
winter held special meaning for people.
Even before Christmas trees and Christainity we brought green leaves into
the home at the Mid Winter festival. The three plants, Holly, Ivy and
Mistletoe had special meaning for the pagan British and today we make
Festive wreaths from Holly and Ivy and hang Mistletoe from the ceiling to
encourage kissing. (for you cannot refuse a kiss under the mistletoe).
A quick walk around my local streets showed these traditions are alive and
well and how also people like to have at least one evergreen shrub in their
front garden.

Old trees

Britain is famous in Europe for having the oldest trees. The slow growing
oak and the beech live a long time in our climate and when they are
pollarded regularly they live even longer as they are less susceptible to
being blown down. Some Oaks can live for 700 years this way.
Pollarded Oaks have traditionally been used to mark boundaries and many
survive standing alone towns or in fields after these boundaries have
changed.
When they eventually die they are made safe and often left to stand as a
slowly rotting tree. An oak can take decades to rot and in the mean time
provides valuable habitat for insects and birds.
This week I made a Christmas cake. It is a rich fruit cake covered with
marzipan and royal icing. Traditionally the cake is made a few weeks early
and 素ed・with brandy every few days to improve its flavour and served on
Christmas Day.
I finished mine and started slicing immediately. I cannot compete with my
Mother痴 cake, where I will be spending Christmas Day.

もし、偶然にも枯れてしまったら、安全措置がとられ、多くの場合はゆっくりと腐っていくようにと残されます。オークは何十年も腐るのに時間がかかり、その間は、昆虫や鳥たちに貴重なすみかとなります。

今週、私はクリスマスケーキをつくりましたあ。濃厚なフルーツケーキで、マジパンと砂糖で覆われています。伝統的にケーキは数週間前につくられ、数日毎に味をよくするためにブランデーが注がれ、クリスマスの日に振舞われます。私はケーキをつくりおわると、すぐにきってたべてしまいましたが。わたしはまだこのクリスマスを過ごすことになっている母のケーキにはかないません。

9th December 2005 Pollarding Old Trees

An old English farm practice is the pollarding of trees. This is cutting the
tree across at about 2m from the ground. At this height, regrowth is too
high for horses and cows to graze.
The tree resprouts and is cut on a 7-14 year cycle. Only a few species are
suitable for this practice but one that really benefits is the Crack Willow.
(Salix fragilis). As the name suggests this waterside willow, splits and
breaks easily and new trees grow from the fallen limbs.
Without pollarding the tree is unsightly and dangerous but if it is
pollarded is can grow quickly to a thick bole that has a lot of character
and its roots can stabilise the riverbank.
All along the rivers of Oxford there are Willows that are being pollarded or
in need of pollarding. Whereas in the past there were plenty of takers for
the wood to burn, now it is a maintenance cost to the local councils and the
wood is chipped and left for nature to dispose of.
Chipped wood is actually one of the best ways to improve a soil and conserve
moisture and I always add some to my vegetable beds as a mulch if I can find
it.

木は再び育ちはじめ、７－ 14年の周期で刈り込まれます。ほんの数種だけがこの方法に適していますが、一番適しているのは Crack　柳（Saliｘ　Fragilis）でしょう。名前が示すように、この水辺の柳は簡単に割れ、折ることができます。そして新しい木は落ちた枝から育ちます。刈り込みなくして木は見苦しく、危険です。もし、刈り込まれると木は早く育ち、とても特徴のある、太いこぶをつくり、根は川岸に安定します。

オックスフォードの川沿いには刈り込まれたか、刈り込みが必要な柳が植えられています。しかしながら、一方では過去に火をたくためにたくさんの木をもっていってくれる人がいましたが、今では地域の役所に維持費がかかり、木はチップに加工され、自然に戻されます。このチップは土を向上させるよい手法の一つで湿度を保ち、私は見つけたらいつも野菜畑に加えます。

2nd December 2005 The fattening Turkey

As Midwinter approaches many things have happened on the farms. First, most,
if not all, of the cows and young steers (castrated males) are now stabled
in barns for the winter.
Cattle are heavy animals and their trampling can compact the soil and damage
the roots of grass and clover. Each farmer knows the point at which each
field is becomes too soft and he takes the cows off to a barn to spend the
winter.
This point is usually during Novemeber on normal soils, but organic farmers
are more careful. They depend on clover growing early in spring to produce
the nitrogen needed for grass to grow well so they often house their cattle
earlier.
Other farm animals such as sheep and free-range turkeys can be left outside.
I came across these free-range turkeys in a biodynamic farm in East Sussex.
They are having a good life but it will end soon as they are destined for
Christmas Dinner tables.

真冬が近づくにつれ、農場ではいろんなことがおきています。まずはじめに何といっても、牝牛と若い去勢された牡牛は冬のために牛舎に入れられます。牛は重たい動物で彼らが動き回ると土が固まり、草やクローバーの根をいためることになります。農民はそれぞれの農地がどの時点でやわらかくなりすぎか判断でき、牛を冬を過ごす牛舎へと移動します。普通の土だとこれは11月に行われるのですが、オーガニック農家ではもっと注意深いのです。春先に芽を出す、草が良く育つのに必須の窒素を作り出すクローバーに頼っているので、牛を早めに移動させます。他の家畜 ( 牛や放し飼いのターキー)などは外に放したままにします。私は East 　SussexのBio　Dynamic の農場でこの放し飼いのターキーをみました。彼らはいい生活をしていますが、クリスマスの食卓にならぶことが決まっているのでその生活ももうすぐ終わりです。

When a white frost hangs on the leaves we call it a ｓoar(an old word for white) frost. In English folklore an elfish (nature) spirit called Jack Frost sprinkles the ice crystals onto the trees. The name Jack actually coming from the Norse (Old Norwegian) word Jokul for Icicle
When there is moisture in the air long crystals can form over night making pretty patterns on leaves and　ｔｗiｎgs. Hoar frosts have been rare in recent years as the winters have been warm but we have had a week of cold sunny weather and a beautiful frost every morning.
Frost is good as it kills off some of the pest insects in the garden but it is hard for the garden song birds we love in England. They cannot feed on worms any more and the snails are all hibernating.　Fortunately some berries such as rose hips and sloe berries only soften when they have a frost on them and they become a very important food for birds at this time.

湿気の多い空気の日は一晩で長い氷の結晶が葉っぱや枝にきれいな模様を作ります。Hoar霜は最近では暖冬のせいで珍しいものでしたが、今週は寒く天気のよい一週間できれいな霜が毎朝おりています。

霜は庭の害虫を駆除するので良いのですがイギリスで親しまれている庭にさえずる鳥たちにはとても辛いものです。ミミズやかたつむりは冬眠してしまい彼らは食べるものがありません。幸運にもローズヒップやスローなどのベリー類は霜が降りた後にやわらかくなり、この時期にはかかせない貴重な鳥たちの食料となります。

25th November: Mushrooms galore
The British are not lovers of mushrooms. We have two names for　fungus fruiting bodies. All the poisonous ones are called toadstools and the edible one mushrooms. But most people do not know which ones
are edible so children are taught to fear them. In fact at least 3　white mushrooms can kill a man easily. Consequently young boys and some adults who have not grown up consider it their duty to destroy
whatever mushroom they see them.
Many fine eating mushrooms are destroyed but if you get up early on　the right days and look hard enough we have many beautiful mushrooms. The weather has been too dry recently to encourage much
fruiting but this week some rain showers came and one day I saw many　beautiful and unusual fungi such as the one here.

In the shops we have a white mushroom bred from the wild field ｍushroom and in recent years we have been seeing the asian cultivated mushrooms such as shitake too.

イギリス人はあまりきのこが好きではありません。きのこには２つの名前があり、毒をもつものは toadstools、食用のものは mushroomsと呼ばれます。しかし、多くの人はどれが食用か分からず、子どもたちにはきのこにはきをつけるようにと教えています。実際、白いきのこ３つで人は簡単に死んでしまいます。結果的に、男の子たちや大人になっていない成人はどんなきのこでもみるとふみつぶして破壊してしまいます。

多くのよい食用のきのこは踏み潰されてしまいますが、いい日に早起きして注意深くさがすとたくさんの美しいきのこを見つけることが出来ます。最近の天気はきのこには乾燥しすぎていましたが、今週は雨もふり、写真のような多くの美しく珍しいきのこをみることができました。

店では野生のきのこから栽培された白いきのこや最近ではしいたけのようなアジアからやってきたきのこもみかけます。

11th November
The fifth of November is what we call our Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes night.
There has always been a fire festival at this time of year and in ancient
Celtic times the 31st Oct was the festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
薦nd of Summer・and was the last day of the old year. Bonfires and feast
were held to finish the old year and protect from the spirits of the dead
which were believed to walk this one night of the year.
But the festival became mixed up with the events of 1605 when a plot formed
by disgruntled Catholics to blow up the English Parliament was foiled. Guy
Fawkes was caught about to light the fuse to the gunpowder by some guards
who had been tipped off that something bad was going to happen.
The celebration is a big bonfire with fireworks and sometimes a stuffed
figure of a man (the Guy) is burnt on the fire. We also serve traditional
food like tomato soup, sausages and baked potato to be eaten outside around
the fire and we say this rhyme;

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
We see no reason,
Why gunpowder treason,
Should ever be forgot!

このお祭りは大きな火祭りと花火でいわわれ、時々 Guyをかたどった詰め物の人形が火の中で焼かれます。伝統的な食べ物であるトマトスープ、ソーセージ、ジャガイモ焼きなどが外で火の回りを囲って食べられます。また次の詩を読みます。

日本も寒くなってきましたが、イギリスも半端ないようです。

（本文）4th November Long Autumn　 Long Autumn
This is most definitely the longest time of autumn colour I have experienced
and the length of the season is getting a lot of comment in the media. The
warm days have meant that the green has stayed in the leaves and all sorts
of beautiful effects have occurred in the leaves.
Trees need cold weather to start the process of leaf fall. The cold sets off
a change in the leaf stalk, which gradually forms a corky node. When this is
complete the leaf will fall in the slightest wind. While this happens the
lessening light causes the green pigment to gradually break down to reveal
yellow, then if the weather is cold enough sugars break down to a red
colour. Of course there are lots of variations and different trees have
stronger colours than others but they all work the same way.
Another reason to celebrate the warm weather is that the birds are leaving
the berries on the trees. It has been a good year for berries and many
sorbus tree and createagus trees.
Once the ground freezes and worms are no longer available the birds will
start stripping the berries in earnest.

確実にこの秋は今までに経験した紅葉のなかで一番長く、この秋の長さについてはメディアの中でもいろいろとりあげられています。暖かい日々は、葉に緑色が残り、いろんな美しい効果を葉に生じてさせています。木が葉を落とす過程には、冷たい天気が必要です。寒さは葉の茎に変化をおこし、少しずつコルクのような節を作ります。これが完成した時に、ちょっとした風で葉は落とします。これがおこる時に和らいでいく光が緑の色素のなかに黄色をちらつかせはじめます。そしてもし天気が充分寒ければ糖分が分解し赤い色を生じさせます。違った木々によってやはり強い色を出したりしますが、全て同じように作用します。
この暖かい天気を祝うほかの理由は、鳥たちが木のベリーを残していることです。今年は、ベリー、Sorbus、Ｃｒａｔａｅｇｕｓ の木の実にはとてもいい年でした。一度地面が凍ると、ミミズがいなくなり、鳥たちはベリーを食べはじめる前触れです。

Every way the wind blows

This week we have seen a lot of different weather as the different systems
that make our climate battle for supremacy.
First some unseasonable warm, still days as weather from the south gently
blew in. The nights were cloudless but warm, as the air was coming from the
Mediterranean. Then Atlantic weather pushed in from the West with lots of
light showers. After a day the wind switched to the North as a new weather
front bought cold windy air from the Arctic Ocean. When more warm weather
arrived from the south it was like summer again.
This weather is good for my leaf vegetables. I have been able to harvest
lettuces but although I am getting a lot of tomatoes many of them seem to
get mouldy quickly and only about one in ten is edible.
The warm evenings brought some lovely sunsets too as dust in the dry air
caught the rays from the setting sun.

（英文） The Jolly Ploughman (This is a name of some pubs)

In these days of winter sown crops October is the beginning of the farming year in England. With the grain harvest in, the farmers are already preparing the fields for sowing the wheat and oil seed rape. Depending on the soil the farmer will either plough and harrow or just harrow.

Where I grew up the soil is heavy clay and the farmers must plough deeply to loosen the soil. The newly turned soil glistens in the sun and has deep earthy smell which you can smell from nearby roads. Where my friend Akiko is at college the soil is light and sandy and the farmers just harrow it to make a fine seed bed. The crops sown will establish and start growing before the cold of winter stops them for a while in January and February.

But that cold seems a long way off. It is warm and we still haven稚 had a frost and I am still harvesting tomatoes and beans from my allotment.

冬まき作物の時期、１０月は英国での農作業の１年の始まりです。穀物は収穫され、農家はすでに麦と菜の花の種をまく畑の準備に入りました。土によって、農家はすき起こしてならすか、ならすだけです。

私が育ったところでは、土がひどい粘土質で、農家は土をやわらかくするために深くすきおこさなくてはいけません。新しく掘り起こされた土はきらきらと太陽の下に輝き、近くの道からでもにおいがするほど深い土のにおいがします。私の友人のアキコの学校近郊では、土は軽く砂土で、農家はならすだけで、よい苗床をつくります。まかれた穀物は1月と 2月の間の冬の寒さが成長をとめる前に確立し、育ちはじめます。

しかし、その寒さはずっと先のようです。暖かく、まだ霜も降りていません。菜園ではまだトマトと豆を収穫することができます。

（英文）Conkers and Chestnuts

The weather has been fine and sunny and mostly dry. In fact excepting the
odd rainy day it has been a classic September with cold starry nights
followed by sunny days with a little high cloud appearing later.

The little Grey Squirrel (Sciurus caroliniensis) is hard at work in the
parks and open spaces of Oxford burying nuts and seeds for the winter. A
week ago acorns were dropping and this week Sweet Chestnuts and Horse
chestnuts are falling.

Horse chestnuts done just feed squirrels they are vital for a schoolboy
game called Conkers, which is peculiar to England. A good round horse
chestnut is pierced and strung onto a string so that it hangs down about
30cm. The participants then take turns to try to smash their opponents
onker・ which is held up at shoulder height, with a carefully aimed flick
of the string. A miss allows to opponent to try his luck.

Eventually one conker is smashed off the string and the survivor is the
winner. The survivor score increments one, plus the score of the loser. So
if a iver・beats a ixer・it becomes a welver・ In this way scores are
built up over the short playing season and can reach into the hundreds.

There was a religious festival called Michaelmas held on the 29th
September. This is the usual time to celebrate the end of the harvest but
outside of Church it is not much celebrated, but at the college where my
friend Akiko studies they held a harvest supper and lit a bonfire after
dark. It was great fun.

HORSE　CHESTNUTはリスの食料になるだけでなく、イギリス独特のCONKERと呼ばれる男の子たちの遊びに必須のものでもあります。良い丸い栗は穴を開け、約３０ｃｍくらいぶら下がるように紐をまきつけ、参加者は肩の高さから紐を打ち鳴らすように、注意深く相手の栗をうちまかしていきます。ミスをすると相手の運をためすことになります。

偶然にも栗の紐がひきちぎれた場合は、残った者が勝ちです。残った人は無情な１点と敗者の得点を得ます。もし、5点の人が6点の人を打ち負かすと、勝者は12点得点になります。このように得点はゲームが行われる季節に積み重ねられていき、何百点にもなるのです。

９月の29日にMICHAELMASという宗教的お祭りが開かれました。これは収穫の終わりを祭る普通の時期ですが、教会以外でおこなわれることはあまりありません。しかしakikoが学ぶ学校では収穫の夕食がもうけられ、暗くなってからは火がともされました。とても楽しかったです。

（英文）Aster la vista

Two plants that brighten up the early autumn in the countryside are not even
native to England but they do come from New England in the North East of
America.
The Michaelmas Daisy (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) and the Goldenrod
(Soilidago sp)are 賎arden Escapes・ They rapidly establish themselves in
abandoned fields and there is no native grassland plants that follows its
pattern of a growing late in the year and flowering in late summer and early
autumn.
Abandoned allotments are the classic habitat for them and where my allotment
is there are many as most people don稚 seem to get round to doing any work.
It is a little bit of American prairie in England.
The 善rairie Style・of planting which is popular in The Netherlands and
Germany is slowly becoming popular here. Piet Oudorf has planted a huge
border at the Wisley Garden (Home of the Royal Horticultural Society). One
of the main differences to a traditional English Border is the effect of
leaving seedheads and dead plants to create structure and shape through the
Autumn and Winter. On my allotment nobody cuts the seeds heads down either
and bands of small seed eating birds love to feed on the fluffy seeds.

放棄された共同菜園は典型的な彼らの棲家で、私の菜園があるところでも、多くの人がそこまで作業をする時間がないようで、たくさん育っています。イギリスの中のちょっとしたアメリカの草原です。

草原スタイルの植栽はオランダとドイツで人気で、ここイギリスでも少しずつ人気がでてきました。Piet　OudorfはWisley　Garden（英国王室園芸協会の本拠地）にとても大きな花畑を作りました。イギリスの伝統的な植栽と大きく違う点は、秋と冬にかけ、構成と形を作るために種のついた花と枯れた植物をそのまま残しておく効果でしょう。

（英文）Poplar

With our weather beginning to oscillate between cold and dry, and warm and
wet it seems that autumn is beginning to win the battle. Already some of the
trees that stress easily in the dry late summer have begun to drop their
leaves.
The Poplars are the most easily stressed. We have three distinct species,
the English Black Poplar (Populus nigra var betulifolia) the White Poplar
(Populus alba) and the Aspen (Populus tremula) as well as hybrids and
foreign species which are grown for timber or for ornament. Although we can
expect a beautiful golden colour from the leaves later in the season, at the
moment they are dropping brown leaves from their lower branches. It is a
reminder that Autumn is around the corner.
This time of year is a time of plenty in the vegetable garden. Everything is
ripening and the tender vegetables from the sub tropics that I grow (French
beans, tomatoes, Sweetcorn, Courgettes, Pumpkins) are overloaded with
fruits.
On the farms most grain crops are now harvested but wheat, the slowest of
our three grains to ripen (the others being barley and oats), is still being
harvested in some areas. The full moon in September on the 18th September is
called the Harvest Moon and around this date when the whole harvest is in
local Churches celebrate a Harvest Festival.

９月１８日の満月は収穫の月と呼ばれ、地元の教会に収穫物が持ちこまれる頃に収穫祭が祝われます。

（英文）Apple Days

The wild apple trees that grow in many country hedgerows were putting on a spectacular display of small yellow green fruits a couple of weeks ago. The wild apple is an ancestor of the domestic apple tree and can also grow from eating apple cores thrown into hedges as most eating apples do not come true from seed.
English children are told that it OK to throw apple cores into hedges because a crab apple tree might grow. The fruit is edible but very sour, so a lot of sugar must be added and then it is made into a jelly for serving with pork.
After a week or so the crab apple drops all its fruit in one go, making for a spectacular sight on the ground around. Right now though, the domestic apples are nearly ripe and they look very beautiful when grown as a garden tree as the fruits are so large and the colours so varied.
Our apples are very tasty as most years we have perfect climate for growing them and many varieties have been developed over the years for different each with a different taste or keeping quality.
I have included some pictures to show the variety but I haven’t been able to identify all the varieties.

１週間ぐらいたつと、野生のりんごは一度にその果実を落とします。その周りの地面は見事な光景です。ちょうど今、栽培されているりんごはほとんど熟し、間実がとても大きく、さまざまな色をしているので、庭木として育てられ時も大変美しく見えます。

（英文）The most beautiful garden in England

I have just visited my favourite garden in all of England. The Sissinghurst garden was once private, but is now open to the public because it is owned by the National Trust, a charity that looks after natural and cultural treasures.
The garden was developed from a ruined ancient farmhouse in the 1920s by Sir Harold Nicolson, a diplomat and author and Vita Sackville-West a poet and garden writer.
The garden was inspired by the new English styles developed by William Robinson and Gertrude Jeykle, such as perennial borders with artistic colour combinations and a loose, naturalistic use of plants. But it is special because Vita Sackville-West created some very beautiful planting designs. It is difficult to keep many plants in flower in an English garden into early Autumn but all the garden spaces at Sissinghurst were brimming with colour. The famous white garden, where all the plants have white in their leaves or flowers was still looking beautiful and showed how white flowers help you appreciate all the shades of green in plant leaves.
I also liked the use of materials. Local brick and stone were both used in different combinations to create formal or informal paths.
Under some shrubs I spotted the Autumn crocus. Despite the beautiful weather we have been having, it means that cold weather is not far away.

秋の始めに英国の庭で多くの花々を咲かせるのは難しいのですが、ここシシングハーストではすべての庭空間では色があふれんばかりでした。よく知られている白の庭はすべての植物は葉か花が白いのですが、この時期でもまだ美しく、いかに白い花が葉の緑の色合いを堪能するのに一役かっているかを印象付けました。

また私はこの庭の素材の使い方も好きでした。地元のレンガと石の両方が違った組み合わせで使われて正式なまた非正式な小道を作り上げていました。

潅木の下に秋のクロッカスを見つけました。ここ最近美しい気候に恵まれているにもかかわらず、寒い天気はすぐそこまで来ているということでしょう。

Another fruit that can be found wild in England is the plum. Many plums　are　ready to eat at the moment　and they look beautiful because the ripening fruits have so many colours in them.
Our climate seems to be ideal for plums of all kinds. English plums are thin skinned, sweet and juicy. The ancestor of most of the domestic plums grows wild here and is called the Bullace (Prunus insititia). This old word for plum, ‘Bull’ turns up in the name of a bird; the Bullfinch, which is notorious for eating plum blossoms and is often shot by farmers for this reason.
The fruit of the Bullace is called the Damson and it is a tradition to make Damson wine and Damson jam from the wild fruits.
In the garden, English people usually grow only two varieties, The Plum ‘ Victoria’ and the Plum ‘Greengage’. A single tree of each will produce buckets of fruit and as a child I remember getting bored of eating plums that my grandmother brought round to our house. Now I am growing my own fruit and vegetables I can appreciate the value of such a hugely productive fruit tree.

（英文）Little Red Fruits

There is a strong feeling of fruitfulness at the moment. In the wild hedgerows, the blackberry is ripening and so, also is the fruit of the White Bryony (Bryonia dioica) and Black Bryony (Tamus communis). These two climbing perennials have beautiful tresses of small red berries like tiny tomatoes. Black Bryony is a member of the Yam family but unfortunately all parts of it are poisonous to eat. Blackberry is not though, and is one of the few wild foods that everyone still gathers at some point in their life in the UK.
I like to eat a few when I pass them but many people still gather a winter supply from a favourite ‘bramble patch’ and freeze them for use through the winter. A classic English pudding and one of my favourites is Blackberry and Apple Pie. This is delicious hot or cold with cream or custard.
On my allotment I am harvesting my Cherry Tomatoes ‘Gardeners delight’. Growing tomatoes outside is possible in the UK but for a good crop most people grow them in a green house or against a wall. My tomato plants are in the open and I don’t water them much either. I rely on lots of mulch and growing large leafed plants like Burdock (Gobu) around them to keep their roots shaded. It seems to work. As well, as I have had no trouble from pests or diseases and they taste extraordinarily good.

The wheat harvest is nearly in. The UK is a major grower of wheat in Europe and the South-East of England is the main place for growing it.
The farmers have been working around the clock to bring in the harvest as we had a week of hot, dry days which means they do not have to do much artificial drying.
Trying to beat the rain during harvest time is an important battle for British farmers and it has always meant working long hours, sometimes through the night.
The long grass has been cut in my local park too. They allow the grass to grow long to attract wildlife but after the seeds of the wildflowers have dropped they cut it and will take away the grass for compost. By taking away the grass they gradually reduce the nutrients in the soil and this allows the meadow flowers to grow better than the grass.
With these events and the fact that the night-time air is getting cooler there is sad feeling that summer is nearly over.

（原文）　East Sussex: A gardener’s paradise

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the Chalk hills to the north of London called the Chilterns. There is an area of hills to the south of London called the Weald. This area is still largely forested and with south facing slopes and lots of unspoilt valleys it became an ideal place for country houses for wealthy Londoners in the 1920’s.
Some of the best gardens in England are there such as Sissinghurst, Nymans and Wakehurst Place, all of them open to the public. I took the chance of a visit to the area to visit Nymans.
This was the garden of a wealthy solicitor and was built early this century. In keeping with the owner it is very much a garden of collections rather than an artistic creation but it had many interesting things to see. The main flower border was in the Victorian style; stiff blocks of bright colour rather than natural drifts of pastel colours that was popular later. It makes an impressive display though.
In wilder parts of the garden there were lovely avenues and views. Take a close look at the fence. It has a style specific to this area. It is made from split oak, mortised together. There are no nails involved and when oak is split rather than sawn it can last well over a century in the outdoors without any chemical treatment at all. I think the Japanese would say this item has wabi-sabi.

（原文）Open Gardens

Over 75 years ago a nursing charity had the idea that owners could open their gardens to the public and raise money. With so many well designed and planted private gardens in the UK the idea took off quickly and now thousands of large and medium sized gardens are open at different times throughout the year. If you are visiting the UK you can check http://www.ngs.org.uk to see if any are open in the areas you are visiting.
Last week our mini-drought ended (after 15 days without significant rain we officially have a drought in the UK because may agricultural plants start to suffer). It has rained on and off since then. With little to do in the garden and allotment I, and my friend, Akiko decided to visit an local open garden.

It belongs to a successful garden designer, Duncan Heather (http://www.garden-design.org ), and is set high in the Chilterns, a distinctive forested chalk escarpment that lies to the north of London. The garden combined many features that are popular in modern English garden design. There was an ornamental vegetable garden, a modernist area of decking and water, a flower garden with a prairie style planting, some bold colour themed planting (purple and yellow) and a wild woodland garden. Also in common with current fashions there were a lot of naturalistic sculptures arranged throughout the ½ acre (0.2 Hectare) garden.
I like the garden a lot and admired how well the different parts were integrated together with the house. I hope you like the pictures
