11th November
The fifth of November is what we call our Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes night.
There has always been a fire festival at this time of year and in ancient
Celtic times the 31st Oct was the festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
薦nd of Summer・and was the last day of the old year. Bonfires and feast
were held to finish the old year and protect from the spirits of the dead
which were believed to walk this one night of the year.
But the festival became mixed up with the events of 1605 when a plot formed
by disgruntled Catholics to blow up the English Parliament was foiled. Guy
Fawkes was caught about to light the fuse to the gunpowder by some guards
who had been tipped off that something bad was going to happen.
The celebration is a big bonfire with fireworks and sometimes a stuffed
figure of a man (the Guy) is burnt on the fire. We also serve traditional
food like tomato soup, sausages and baked potato to be eaten outside around
the fire and we say this rhyme;

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
We see no reason,
Why gunpowder treason,
Should ever be forgot!

11月５日は BONFIREまたはGuy Fawkesの日です。いつもこの時期には火祭りがあり、古代の CELTIC の暦では１０月31日が Samhain （sow-inと発音）の祭りでした。夏の終わりが1年の最期とされていました。Bonfireと晩餐会は古い一年の最期を迎えるのに開かれ、また、 1年のこの日の夜だけにさまよい歩くと信じられている死の霊から守るためにおこなわれました。しかし、この祭りは１６０５年の英国議院を爆破しようとした不満を持ったカトリック信者たちのたくらみが失敗した事件とも一緒になっています。Guy Fawkesは導火線に火をつけようとしたときに、何か悪いことがおこると密告をうけた護衛官たちによって捕まってしまいました。
このお祭りは大きな火祭りと花火でいわわれ、時々 Guyをかたどった詰め物の人形が火の中で焼かれます。伝統的な食べ物であるトマトスープ、ソーセージ、ジャガイモ焼きなどが外で火の回りを囲って食べられます。また次の詩を読みます。
