When a white frost hangs on the leaves we call it a ｓoar(an old word for white) frost. In English folklore an elfish (nature) spirit called Jack Frost sprinkles the ice crystals onto the trees. The name Jack actually coming from the Norse (Old Norwegian) word Jokul for Icicle
When there is moisture in the air long crystals can form over night making pretty patterns on leaves and　ｔｗiｎgs. Hoar frosts have been rare in recent years as the winters have been warm but we have had a week of cold sunny weather and a beautiful frost every morning.
Frost is good as it kills off some of the pest insects in the garden but it is hard for the garden song birds we love in England. They cannot feed on worms any more and the snails are all hibernating.　Fortunately some berries such as rose hips and sloe berries only soften when they have a frost on them and they become a very important food for birds at this time.

白い霜が葉におりるとき、HOAR（白い言葉を意味する古い言葉）といいます。イギリスの説話では Jack　Frostと呼ばれるエルフ（自然）の精霊が木に氷のクリスタルをまき、JACKという名前は実際は JORKULというツララを意味するNORSE 語（古いノルウェイ語）から来ています。

湿気の多い空気の日は一晩で長い氷の結晶が葉っぱや枝にきれいな模様を作ります。Hoar霜は最近では暖冬のせいで珍しいものでしたが、今週は寒く天気のよい一週間できれいな霜が毎朝おりています。

霜は庭の害虫を駆除するので良いのですがイギリスで親しまれている庭にさえずる鳥たちにはとても辛いものです。ミミズやかたつむりは冬眠してしまい彼らは食べるものがありません。幸運にもローズヒップやスローなどのベリー類は霜が降りた後にやわらかくなり、この時期にはかかせない貴重な鳥たちの食料となります。
