日本も寒くなってきましたが、イギリスも半端ないようです。

（本文）4th November Long Autumn　 Long Autumn
This is most definitely the longest time of autumn colour I have experienced
and the length of the season is getting a lot of comment in the media. The
warm days have meant that the green has stayed in the leaves and all sorts
of beautiful effects have occurred in the leaves.
Trees need cold weather to start the process of leaf fall. The cold sets off
a change in the leaf stalk, which gradually forms a corky node. When this is
complete the leaf will fall in the slightest wind. While this happens the
lessening light causes the green pigment to gradually break down to reveal
yellow, then if the weather is cold enough sugars break down to a red
colour. Of course there are lots of variations and different trees have
stronger colours than others but they all work the same way.
Another reason to celebrate the warm weather is that the birds are leaving
the berries on the trees. It has been a good year for berries and many
sorbus tree and createagus trees.
Once the ground freezes and worms are no longer available the birds will
start stripping the berries in earnest.

確実にこの秋は今までに経験した紅葉のなかで一番長く、この秋の長さについてはメディアの中でもいろいろとりあげられています。暖かい日々は、葉に緑色が残り、いろんな美しい効果を葉に生じてさせています。木が葉を落とす過程には、冷たい天気が必要です。寒さは葉の茎に変化をおこし、少しずつコルクのような節を作ります。これが完成した時に、ちょっとした風で葉は落とします。これがおこる時に和らいでいく光が緑の色素のなかに黄色をちらつかせはじめます。そしてもし天気が充分寒ければ糖分が分解し赤い色を生じさせます。違った木々によってやはり強い色を出したりしますが、全て同じように作用します。
この暖かい天気を祝うほかの理由は、鳥たちが木のベリーを残していることです。今年は、ベリー、Sorbus、Ｃｒａｔａｅｇｕｓ の木の実にはとてもいい年でした。一度地面が凍ると、ミミズがいなくなり、鳥たちはベリーを食べはじめる前触れです。
