毎週恒例のイギリスガーデナー情報です。

このところ、われわれグリーンケアの事務所は
風邪の猛威にやられ、私河越を含め、ほぼ全員が被害にあっています。
そんなこともあり、今週は記事掲載がおろそかになり、
毎日楽しみにしてくださっている方々には、大変申し訳ありません。

（英文） The Jolly Ploughman (This is a name of some pubs)

In these days of winter sown crops October is the beginning of the farming year in England. With the grain harvest in, the farmers are already preparing the fields for sowing the wheat and oil seed rape. Depending on the soil the farmer will either plough and harrow or just harrow.

Where I grew up the soil is heavy clay and the farmers must plough deeply to loosen the soil. The newly turned soil glistens in the sun and has deep earthy smell which you can smell from nearby roads. Where my friend Akiko is at college the soil is light and sandy and the farmers just harrow it to make a fine seed bed. The crops sown will establish and start growing before the cold of winter stops them for a while in January and February.

But that cold seems a long way off. It is warm and we still haven稚 had a frost and I am still harvesting tomatoes and beans from my allotment.

冬まき作物の時期、１０月は英国での農作業の１年の始まりです。穀物は収穫され、農家はすでに麦と菜の花の種をまく畑の準備に入りました。土によって、農家はすき起こしてならすか、ならすだけです。

私が育ったところでは、土がひどい粘土質で、農家は土をやわらかくするために深くすきおこさなくてはいけません。新しく掘り起こされた土はきらきらと太陽の下に輝き、近くの道からでもにおいがするほど深い土のにおいがします。私の友人のアキコの学校近郊では、土は軽く砂土で、農家はならすだけで、よい苗床をつくります。まかれた穀物は1月と 2月の間の冬の寒さが成長をとめる前に確立し、育ちはじめます。

しかし、その寒さはずっと先のようです。暖かく、まだ霜も降りていません。菜園ではまだトマトと豆を収穫することができます。
