（英文）Conkers and Chestnuts

The weather has been fine and sunny and mostly dry. In fact excepting the
odd rainy day it has been a classic September with cold starry nights
followed by sunny days with a little high cloud appearing later.

The little Grey Squirrel (Sciurus caroliniensis) is hard at work in the
parks and open spaces of Oxford burying nuts and seeds for the winter. A
week ago acorns were dropping and this week Sweet Chestnuts and Horse
chestnuts are falling.

Horse chestnuts done just feed squirrels they are vital for a schoolboy
game called Conkers, which is peculiar to England. A good round horse
chestnut is pierced and strung onto a string so that it hangs down about
30cm. The participants then take turns to try to smash their opponents
onker・ which is held up at shoulder height, with a carefully aimed flick
of the string. A miss allows to opponent to try his luck.

Eventually one conker is smashed off the string and the survivor is the
winner. The survivor score increments one, plus the score of the loser. So
if a iver・beats a ixer・it becomes a welver・ In this way scores are
built up over the short playing season and can reach into the hundreds.

There was a religious festival called Michaelmas held on the 29th
September. This is the usual time to celebrate the end of the harvest but
outside of Church it is not much celebrated, but at the college where my
friend Akiko studies they held a harvest supper and lit a bonfire after
dark. It was great fun.

天気はよく、晴れていて、ほとんど乾燥しています。実際のところ、変な雨の日を抜かし、冷たい星が広がる夜、そして空の高いところに少し雲が後からあらわれるような晴れた日が続く典型的な９月の陽気でした。小さな灰色のリス（SCIURUS　CAROLINIENSIS）はオックスフォードの公園や空き地で、冬のためのナッツや種を埋めるのに一生懸命働いています。一週間前にどんぐりが落ち始め、今週は栗そしてHORSE　CHESTNUTが落ち始めました。

HORSE　CHESTNUTはリスの食料になるだけでなく、イギリス独特のCONKERと呼ばれる男の子たちの遊びに必須のものでもあります。良い丸い栗は穴を開け、約３０ｃｍくらいぶら下がるように紐をまきつけ、参加者は肩の高さから紐を打ち鳴らすように、注意深く相手の栗をうちまかしていきます。ミスをすると相手の運をためすことになります。

偶然にも栗の紐がひきちぎれた場合は、残った者が勝ちです。残った人は無情な１点と敗者の得点を得ます。もし、5点の人が6点の人を打ち負かすと、勝者は12点得点になります。このように得点はゲームが行われる季節に積み重ねられていき、何百点にもなるのです。

９月の29日にMICHAELMASという宗教的お祭りが開かれました。これは収穫の終わりを祭る普通の時期ですが、教会以外でおこなわれることはあまりありません。しかしakikoが学ぶ学校では収穫の夕食がもうけられ、暗くなってからは火がともされました。とても楽しかったです。
