Another fruit that can be found wild in England is the plum. Many plums　are　ready to eat at the moment　and they look beautiful because the ripening fruits have so many colours in them.
Our climate seems to be ideal for plums of all kinds. English plums are thin skinned, sweet and juicy. The ancestor of most of the domestic plums grows wild here and is called the Bullace (Prunus insititia). This old word for plum, ‘Bull’ turns up in the name of a bird; the Bullfinch, which is notorious for eating plum blossoms and is often shot by farmers for this reason.
The fruit of the Bullace is called the Damson and it is a tradition to make Damson wine and Damson jam from the wild fruits.
In the garden, English people usually grow only two varieties, The Plum ‘ Victoria’ and the Plum ‘Greengage’. A single tree of each will produce buckets of fruit and as a child I remember getting bored of eating plums that my grandmother brought round to our house. Now I am growing my own fruit and vegetables I can appreciate the value of such a hugely productive fruit tree.

もう一つ、英国で見つけることができる果実はプラムです。多くのプラムは今食べごろで、熟した果実はいろんな色をしていてきれいです。

ここの気候はすべての種のプラムに適しているようです。イギリスのプラムは薄皮で甘く、汁気があります。国内で栽培さているプラムのおおくの祖先は自然に育ち、Bullace (Prunus insititia)と呼ばれています。この古いプラムをさす ‘Bull’は鳥の名前から由来しています。Bullfinchはプラムの花を食べることで悪名高く、そのためによく農民によって撃たれています。
Bullaceの果実はダムスンと呼ばれ、自然の果実からダムスンワインとダムスンジャムを作ることが伝統になっています。
庭では、イギリスのひとびとはたいてい２種類だけ‘ Victoria’ と‘Greengage’のプラムを育てています。それそれ一本の木からバケツ何杯分もの果実をつけ、子供のころ、祖母が持ってくるプラムを食べるのに飽き飽きしていたのを思い出します。今は自分の果物と野菜を育てているので、このような大変生産的な果物の木の価値に感謝しています。
