（原文）　East Sussex: A gardener’s paradise

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the Chalk hills to the north of London called the Chilterns. There is an area of hills to the south of London called the Weald. This area is still largely forested and with south facing slopes and lots of unspoilt valleys it became an ideal place for country houses for wealthy Londoners in the 1920’s.
Some of the best gardens in England are there such as Sissinghurst, Nymans and Wakehurst Place, all of them open to the public. I took the chance of a visit to the area to visit Nymans.
This was the garden of a wealthy solicitor and was built early this century. In keeping with the owner it is very much a garden of collections rather than an artistic creation but it had many interesting things to see. The main flower border was in the Victorian style; stiff blocks of bright colour rather than natural drifts of pastel colours that was popular later. It makes an impressive display though.
In wilder parts of the garden there were lovely avenues and views. Take a close look at the fence. It has a style specific to this area. It is made from split oak, mortised together. There are no nails involved and when oak is split rather than sawn it can last well over a century in the outdoors without any chemical treatment at all. I think the Japanese would say this item has wabi-sabi.

数週間前に、the Chilternと呼ばれるロンドン北の石灰でできた丘陵について書きましたが、ロンドンの南にもthe Wealdと呼ばれる丘陵があります。この地帯はまだ多くが森林、南傾斜、そして多くの自然が残された谷があり、１９２０年代に裕福なロンドンの人々にとって田舎の家に理想的な場所となりました。

有名なイギリスの庭のいくつか、 Sissinghurstや Nymans そして Wakehurst Placeなどはこの地域にあり、すべてが一般に公開されています。私は Nymansをおとずれるためにこの地域を訪ねる機会がありました。

ここは裕福な弁護士の庭で今世紀の初めにつくられました。この庭はアーティストが作ったものというよりは、持ち主のように収集家の庭で、たくさん見るものがあります。メインの花壇はその後人気がでたパステルカラーの自然な流れというよりは、鮮やかな色の硬いブロックのビクトリア時代のスタイルで作られていました。

庭の自然な部分には素敵な並木道と眺めがあります。フェンスをよく見てください。この地域独特のスタイルでできています。さいたOAKの木でほぞつきされています。釘は一本も使われておらず、木は切られるよりもむしろ裂かれるほうが戸外では何の化学塗料なしで、１００年以上も長持ちするのです。日本人のかたがたはきっとこれをわびさびと言うのでしょうね。
